Many years ago while doing intensive work with masculine and feminine energies in life, I discovered, to my eternal surprise, that there really are fascinating differences between the feminine and masculine purpose. It is clear to see when a man, essentially masculine in nature, has disconnected from himself, and his purpose on earth. He generally comes home from work he loathes, grabs the television remote control in one hand, a beer in the other and looks exceedingly vacant when spoken to by either his wife or his children. No presence… and everyone gets it. Equally evident for women who separate from their innate feminine nature, we frequently feel lethargic, unattractive, depressed or frantic, often simultaneously.
The feminine movement in the sixties championed women into a male-dominated society with the refreshingly positive intention of encouraging the “other half” of our culture to step up and be counted, as is our constitutional right. And we did. In droves. Increasing numbers of women are graduating from universities today with math and science degrees, and in many colleges, outnumbering men. Hooray for Spirited Women everywhere! If you browse Feminine Power on the internet you’ll find nearly two million sites devoted to that subject. Something big IS happening for us as women, and discovering our true, inner purpose is the key to our individual and collective success.
As a keen observer of the pre and post-feminine era, I am constantly amazed to see so many successful women in business today (40% are the primary breadwinners of their households) who are also profoundly unhappy. And these are not just women I see in my counseling practice, but friends across the spectrum of age, education and marital status.
Given that all males and females have both qualities of masculine and feminine within them (some more than others) what I am speaking to here is the feminine essence in women––you, the Spirited Woman reading this. What is it that dazzles you? What is the driving spark that makes you swoon or moan with delight? What sends chill thrills down your spine? Your feminine purpose is aligned somewhere inside that feeling.
The Spirited Woman will continue to evolve, working, paying the bills, creating the next great movie or discovering a cure for cancer, AND her evolution (which I see is calling out to women everywhere) is to honor our feminine purpose equally. The world will be saved, as the Dalai Lama recently said, “by the Western woman.”
You are that woman.
